Fulton County Superior Court
First, you need to understand that EVERY Georgia traffic ticket is a MISDEMEANOR offense. That fact alone should explain why you need to hire a knowledgeable traffic ticket lawyer for your Atlanta Municipal Court case. Misdemeanor convictions do not AGE off your criminal record. Plus, under Georgia DUI laws, any conviction stays on your record for life and no diversion, deferred adjudication, or expungement is possible in Georgia.
While certain types of traffic ticket crimes and certain kinds of special pleas MAY offer a chance for record restriction, a guilty or nolo contendere plea generally does NOT make that traffic ticket case a case disposition that can be restricted later. Ask the best lawyers in Atlanta about alternative pleas, such as diversion, for first offenders.
The two busiest courts in Fulton County, Georgia are Atlanta Municipal Court and State Court of Fulton County. Many people who have misplaced their Atlanta traffic ticket begin a frantic search for “Fulton County Court”, or “Atlanta Municipal Court Docket”, or even “Fulton County Magistrate Court.” An Atlanta criminal defense attorney from our office covers ALL metro Atlanta traffic courts, regardless of location or limited jurisdiction, but you need to track down your Court and get a copy of your traffic tickets for us first. DON’T miss court and get a failure to appear (FTA) warrant issued against you.
The Atlanta Municipal Court operates at 150 Garnett Street, Atlanta GA 30303, and the Magistrate’s Court of Fulton County, criminal division, can be found at 160 Pryor Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303, on the first floor.
Missing your court date can trigger an issuance of an “FTA” (failure to appear) and cause an arrest warrant to be issued for you, plus trigger a driver’s license suspension for the FTA bench warrant. If you missed your Atlanta Municipal Court date and a failure to appear has been entered, you may need a criminal lawyer to act on your behalf to help avoid jail time and reinstate your driver’s license at the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS GA). You can go to the Georgia DDS (GA DMV) website to check the status of your license, at dds.ga.gov.
Call an experienced traffic ticket attorney who is regularly at Atlanta Traffic Court. He or she will ask you to provide your reason or justification for not being at municipal court when scheduled to appear. Then, he or she will intercede on your behalf, to walk you through the process of unraveling the potential jail time or an FTA arrest that can follow a missed Atlanta court date.
Both the Fulton County Magistrate Court, criminal division, and Municipal Court of Atlanta have procedures in place to undo this FTA, have the bench warrant withdrawn, and reinstate your driver’s license. Contact an Atlanta traffic ticket attorney immediately if you have missed traffic court on your scheduled court date.
Less than 5% of Atlanta attorneys practice criminal defense. An even smaller percentage are traffic ticket lawyers focusing on serious misdemeanor DUI and other traffic accident ticket cases in the Municipal Court of Atlanta, or Fulton County Magistrate’s Court. These are the two Fulton County Court locations where a traffic citation requires court attendance by you or your criminal defense lawyer. The two courts are totally separate and autonomous, but are only about 600 yards apart in downtown Atlanta.
Atlanta traffic court handles tickets issues within the city limits of Atlanta in Fulton County GA, with about 5% of traffic court cases being booked in the small sliver of DeKalb County that falls within the Atlanta city limits. On your ticket, LOOK for the county, which may be printed (in VERY small typeface) or written.
Fulton County Magistrate Courtroom, 160 Pryor Street, Atlanta GA
The traffic court address controls where you and your criminal attorney need to be for the first scheduled court appearance called the arraignment. The Fulton Magistrate Court entrance is on Pryor Street, at the corner of Mitchell Street. Being late can cost you, so pay attention to the traffic court location shown on your traffic citation and arrive early. Atlanta is legendary for its traffic jams and long delays in travelers’ schedules.
Atlanta Municipal Court Building, 150 Garnett Street, Atlanta GA
The image at the top of this page is the City of Atlanta Traffic Court, or Municipal Court of Atlanta. It is at the corner of Pryor Street and Garnett Street, which is three streets south if the Fulton Magistrate Court location, on Pryor Street. The Atlanta Traffic Court has 6 floors and multiple courtrooms. The hallway next to the elevators will inform your WHICH courtroom your traffic offense case is pending.
This court has a large, decked parking lot at the east end of Garnett, which takes credit cards of cash. Very few metered parking spaces are near the Atlanta Municipal Court, after 7:30 AM. This deck is NOT cheap, so if you bring cash, have about $15 with you.
You will not find any online dress code for court, so these simple notes may prevent you being sent home to dress properly and come back when your clothing shows respect for the dignity of court proceedings. Proper court attire is something that most adults understand, inherently, but too many others have failed to grasp.
In explaining how to dress for court, let’s start with these DO NOT WEAR clothing items:
For most people, what to wear to court is intuitive. Dress like you want to make a positive impression upon your Judge, and (since he or she must be convinced to offer you a favorable plea deal) upon the Prosecutor. Dress as though you were attending a wedding, church, or an important high-dollar job interview. Court clothes need to be conservative. For more details, see this multi-page guide.
